About Us

Freestone Guitars was established in 2015 in the Finger Lakes region of New York. We specialize in bolt-on guitar and bass neck construction and can build to custom specifications. Our small team of builders has been here from the start, as musicians we know the right neck can make all the difference in your guitar build. We have constructed thousands of necks over the years and have continued to refine our build process with the goal of making some of the best guitar parts in the world.

Our Lumber

We start with high quality kiln dried lumber which we allow to acclimate in our shop for at least a month before we begin a build. Once the lumber is fully acclimated we begin the steps of rough cutting and processing. During this step we discard any lumber with major flaws or that shows signs of instability. Lumber that does not make the cut will generally be repurposed for shop projects.

Machining

A custom made CAD design is used to generate toolpaths and then a CNC machine is used to do the basic 2d and 3d shaping of our necks. The vast majority of the labor is done by hand in our fully equipped machine shop. We inspect each neck repeatedly throughout the build to make sure that all of the specifications are accurate. A particularly large amount of effort goes in to ensuring that the fretboard has an accurate radius and is as straight and even as possible resulting in a neck that requires minimal fretwork for a low action set up. Each neck is fully finish sanded to 220 grit (800 grit for exotic wood fretboards) and inspected for any scratches or machine marks before we move on to final quality control and packaging.

Limitations

We do not generally offer "Ready to install" necks because there are a number of steps that are best done during the setup process (drilling heel holes, nut installation etc..)

Finishing work is offered on a case by case basis depending on our workload at the time.

We do not currently offer angled headstock necks of any kind.

We do not currently offer "Set-Neck" type necks.

We do not currently offer guitar or bass bodies.

Occasionally we may not have access to a type of lumber that we list in our order form. If this is the case we will inform you once we receive an order or inquiry.
